Advanced Base Camp & The Lhotse Face

The Sherpas, escorted by the team continue the treacherous task of transporting stores from the head of the Western Cwm to Camp 4 also known as Advance Base Camp. In spite of the heat and tough conditions the Sherpas work cheerfully and without complaint. For the climbing party, escorting the Sherpas is a daily task; seeing them safely across all the difficulties of the glacier, breaking the trail and sometimes carrying a load to help out. However there is satisfaction in watching the pile of stores grow at Camp 4.

By May 15th over three tonnes of supplies including food, oxygen and climbing equipment have been carried across this glacier to Advanced Base Camp in preparation for their attempt on the summit.

Advance Base Camp was established in a sheltered depression in the glacier about a mile from the foot of the Lhotse Face. This oasis of tents nestling in one small corner of the vast desert of the Cwm is their home as they ready themselves for the remainder of their journey.

Lhotse, 27890 feet, stretches in a semi-circular mountain wall between Everest and Nuptse, completely closing the Western Cwm at the top. The steep glacier which descends from the summit rocks is known as the Lhotse Face and is one of the most important obstacles in the ascent of Everest from this direction. It presents the group with a 4000 feet wall of difficult ice climbing before they can reach the South Col. Towering above Advance Base Camp is a granite wall which rises to the South Summit of Everest serving as a stark reminder of their final goal.
